Poliovirus type 1 has been found in five cities.

The National Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health, Islamabad (NIH) confirmed the presence of type 1 Wild Poliovirus (WPV1) in environmental samples collected in August from five cities in August-September 2022.

The National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination (NHSR&C) authorities were reported as claiming that the latest environmental samples were gathered from District Bannu, Peshawar, Swat, South Waziristan, and Rawalpindi.

“This is the eighth positive environmental sample from Bannu this year, the fourth from Peshawar, and the third from Rawalpindi and Swat,” an NHSR&C officer stated.

This is the first positive environmental sample from South Waziristan since a WPV1 case was confirmed in the district last week, he noted.In 2022, the total number of positive environmental samples is now 27.

Seventeen positive environmental samples were found in KP (eight in Bannu, four in Peshawar, three in Swat, and one each in Nowshera and South Waziristan), eight in Punjab (three each in Lahore and Rawalpindi, and one each in Bahawalpur and Sialkot), and one in Sindh (Karachi Landhi).

In April, two positive environmental samples were found, two in May, one in June, seven in July, fifteen in August, and one in September 2022. 65 positive environmental samples were found in the country in 2021. To address the hazards connected with the recent poliovirus identification in the environment, a sub-national emergency response round was conducted in August 2022.

Extended outreach initiatives were also carried out in the districts with recent positive environmental tests during the current month. A mop-up operation in the five districts of KP with recent detection is also underway.

A campaign will also be held in Karachi, Quetta Block, and Zhob next week, according to the official, who further stated that optimal vaccination of the high-risk and mobile population/children on the move is being assured at transit vaccination stations across the country.

The environmental sample was collected from the Hinjil Noorabad site in Bannu on September 1, 2022. This is the eighth positive sample from the Bannu district in 2022. One positive sample was found in April 2022, two in May 2022, one in June 2022, and one in July 2022.

Two will be released in August 2022, and one in September 2022. The district’s latest wild poliovirus case was recorded in April 2020.

The environmental sample was collected from the Shaheen Muslim Town site in Peshawar on September 7, 2022. This is the district’s fourth positive environmental sample in 2022. In July 2022, one positive sample was found, two in August 2022, and one in September 2022. The district’s final Wild Poliovirus case was recorded in July 2020.

On August 30, 2022, an environmental sample was obtained in Swat from the Sharifabad tributary of the Saidu Sharif site. This is the third positive sample from Swat district in 2022. A prior positive sample from the district was discovered.

The district’s last Wild Poliovirus case was recorded in November 2014.The environmental sample was collected at the Kunr Cheena & Spaishta site in South Waziristan on September 5, 2022.

The environmental sample was collected at the Safdarabad site in Rawalpindi on September 8, 2022. This is the district’s third positive environmental sample in 2022. The district’s last Wild Poliovirus infection was recorded in June 2010.
