Stampede near football stadium in Iraq’s Basra kills one, injures dozens

The state news agency said that one person was killed and scores were injured in a stampede Thursday when thousands of football fans tried to enter a stadium in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

The final match of the Arabian Gulf Cup, which Iraq is hosting for the first time in 40 years, was scheduled for Thursday versus Oman.

Basra’s governor, Asaad Abdel Amir, told Reuters that the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation is considering postponing the final match or relocating it to another nation if security does not improve. According to security and medical officials, the stampede occurred at the entrance of the Sports City, which was scheduled to host the final match.
