Switzerland will destroy 10 million doses of the Moderna COVID vaccine.

Switzerland will have to trash 10.3 million doses of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine, which expired last week, according to the health ministry.According to Keystone-ATS, the ministry stated that it had no choice but to discontinue the vaccines when the doses expired last Wednesday.

According to the news agency, 2.5 million of the dosages were housed at a Swiss army logistical centre, while 7.8 million were stored at an external storage site in Belgium. The government validated an original claim on the Swiss news site Beobachter, which put the value of the doses to be destroyed at around 280 million Swiss francs ($285 million).

The health ministry, which did not react quickly to an AFP request for comment, cited its early procurement approach in the rush to create vaccinations to combat the global Covid-19 outbreak. It ordered doses from a variety of manufacturers in order to avoid getting reliant on vaccines that may someday prove ineffective and to defend against any delivery issues.

Because vaccinations based on mRNA technology from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech proved effective, Switzerland had a substantial surplus of doses. The Swissinfo news site predicted in June that Switzerland had an excess of 38 million doses of various Covid vaccinations that would expire before the end of the year.

According to the ministry, 3.5 million doses of the new, updated Moderna vaccine will be available when Switzerland launches its second booster campaign next month.Switzerland, which has recorded 13,556 Covid deaths since the outbreak began, has fully immunised approximately 70% of its 8.7 million inhabitants.
