Tom Cruise, James Camron left in shock by Oscars
Hollywood’s 95th Academy Awards nominations shocked some big names Tuesday morning.
With 11 nominations, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads. “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” follow with nine nominations.
As usual, some Oscar favourites were snubbed by the Academy Awards.
Three-time Oscar nominee Tom Cruise sought his first Best Actor win since 1996’s “Jerry Maguire.” His long-awaited “Top Gun” sequel grossed the most in 2022 and received excellent reviews.
“Maverick” received six nominations, including Best Picture. Many analysts assumed Cruise might ride the “Top Gun” train, but getting a popcorn movie role was impossible.
James Cameron, who called himself “the ruler of the universe” after winning the Directing Oscar for “Titanic” 25 years earlier, was similarly snubbed.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” was nominated for Best Picture, three craft categories, and the director.
For the first time, “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” are best picture nominees. Both blockbusters grossed $3.5 billion.
Tom Cruise was snubbed for acting. On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not nominate James Camron for best director, a major Oscar snub.
