PCB mulls appointing Shahid Afridi as ‘chief selector till 2023 World Cup’

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning to name former captain Shahid Afridi as chief selector until the 2023 World Cup in India.

The PCB Management Committee, led by Najam Sethi, nominated the all-rounder to serve as the interim chair of the Men’s National Selection Committee for the home series against New Zealand.

“I feel honoured to have been entrusted this job by the PCB Management Committee,” Afridi remarked after being appointed.

To regain the support of the public, he continued, “we need to get back to winning ways, and I have no doubts that via meritocratic and smart selection decisions, we can help the national team to perform strongly in the series against New Zealand.”

Haroon Rashid (a member of the Management Committee) is serving as the panel’s convener, and former cricketers Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum are also participating.

Between the years 1996 and 2018, Shahid Afridi appeared in 27 Tests, 398 ODIs, and 99 T20Is, amassing 11,196 runs and 541 wickets. In addition, he captained the national team in 83 games. Also in 2009, he helped Pakistan win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as a part of the national team.

When offered a spot on the management committee, Afridi declined so that he could devote more time to his nonprofit.

It looks like Arthur will be the next coach.
As for the Pakistan men’s team, Mickey Arthur is on track to become the new head coach and is expected to be in Pakistan within the next few weeks.

As soon as the South African completes his departure arrangements with the English county team Derbyshire, where he serves as head of cricket, he will land in Pakistan.

Prior to taking over in 2016, Arthur led the Pakistan squad for three years.

Notably, both head coach Saqlain Mushtaq and bowling coach Shaun Tait’s contracts will end on February 9, 2023.
