Pacers need a “rotation policy” before the World Cup, says Umar Gul.

LAHORE: Umar Gul, a former fast bowler for Pakistan who is now a bowling teacher, said that the “rotation policy” is important for the fast bowlers before the ICC World Cup 2023, which will be held in India in October and November.

Gul, who has played 130 ODIs for Pakistan, told Geo News on Monday that it is important to keep pacers fresh for the next big event.

“We’re lucky to have fast bowlers who can throw the ball at 140+ miles per hour. “To keep them in shape for the World Cup in India, we need to take care of them and use a rotation system,” he said.

“I’m sure PCB and the selection committee are thinking about this right now because it’s too important,” he said.

Shaheen Shah Afridi hurt his knee last year, so he missed the ODI series against the Netherlands, the Asia Cup, and the home T20I series against England. He played in the T20 World Cup 2022 but once again injured himself in the final to stay out of cricket action for the next three months. He played competitive cricket again in the eighth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), which just ended. As captain of the Lahore Qalandars, he led them to their second straight tournament win.

At the same time, Gul talked about getting the bowling teacher job back. “I am overwhelmed that PCB trusted me once again and gave me an opportunity to work with the national team,” he said.

“I used to enjoy playing for Pakistan and now I am looking forward to enjoy this new role,” he added.

While replying to a question, Umar said he is just trying to train young and exciting fast bowlers. “We have very good and promising fast bowlers. I just try to spend time with them and tell them how to face a new batter at the crease. Also, I tell them to always bowl the way the field tells them to,” he said.

Umar was put in charge of bowling for the T20I series against Afghanistan, which Pakistan’s young team lost 2-1. He was given more time to do his job for the New Zealand tour.
