Xi will go to Iran, and both countries are calling for sanctions against Tehran to be lifted.

BEIJING: Both China’s President Xi Jinping and Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi called on Thursday for the lifting of sanctions against Iran as part of an international agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme that has been stuck for a while.

Raisi invited Xi to visit Iran, and Xi said he would go when it was convenient for him. The two leaders said this in a joint statement on the last day of Raisi’s three-day state visit to China. In 2016, Xi went to Iran as part of a trip through the Middle East.

In their statement, the leaders called for the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, to be put into action. Under this agreement, Iran agreed with several countries, including the U.S., to slow down its nuclear programme in exchange for fewer economic sanctions.

In 2018, Donald Trump, who was then president of the US, pulled the US out of the deal and told the US government to put sanctions back on Iran.

President Joe Biden said that the United States would go back to the deal in 2021 if Iran started following the rules again, but talks have stopped.

“All relevant sanctions should be fully lifted in a way that can be checked,” Xi and Raisi said. This would help with the full and effective implementation.

Both China and Iran said that lifting sanctions and making sure that Iran’s economy would benefit were important parts of the agreement.

On Tuesday, Xi told Raisi that China would “participate constructively” in talks to restart talks about putting the agreement into action. He also told Raisi that he would help Iran protect its rights and interests.

In the statement, the leaders said, “China is strongly against outside forces meddling in Iran’s internal affairs and undermining Iran’s security and stability.”

The two leaders also came up with a number of plans, such as promoting e-commerce and farming.

In December of last year, Iran was angry about a statement that China and Gulf states made during Xi’s trip to Saudi Arabia. This show of cooperation was a stark contrast to that.

The China-Gulf Cooperation Council asked Iran to work with the International Atomic Energy Agency and to find a peaceful way to solve the problem of three islands that Iran controls but that the United Arab Emirates say belong to them.

In response, the Iranian foreign ministry called the Chinese ambassador to Iran and said it was “very unhappy” with the statement.
